Southampton : This English borough, located on an inlet of the English Channel, is the country's busiest deep-water port. Southampton is a vibrant city known for its rich maritime history and its meandering Old Town walls. The city's Westgate is where the Pilgrims set sail for America aboard the Mayflower.

Hamburg : Known in German as Tor zur Welt ? the Gateway to the World ? Hamburg is Germanys most cosmopolitan metropolis. Come here to stand before architectural landmarks, like the towering neo-renaissance Hamburg Rathaus and the baroque Church of St. Michael. Cruise to Germany to experience the lively restaurant and bar scene along the River Elbe, and take in the maritime scenery of Hamburg Harbor, Europes third-busiest port.

Copenhagen : The largest city in Scandinavia, built on two islands, is a cozy metropolis that is often referred to as the "Paris of the North." Its winding streets, timbered houses and 12th-century castles evoke Copenhagen's past. Copenhagen is especially known for cafe culture and thrilling nightlife.

Visby : Visby was the main centre of the Hanseatic League of the Baltic from the 12th to 14th centuries. Its 13th-century ramparts and more than 200 warehouses and trading establishments from these periods make it the best-preserved fortified commercial city in Northern Europe.

Helsinki : The exotic capital of Finland is a consummate city of the sea, built along a series of peninsulas and islands jutting along the Gulf of Finland. Neoclassical schemes of the early 1800's and modernist Finnish styles of the mid 20th century combine to make it a sprawling masterpiece, outfitted with sea-bordered parks, picturesque boulevards and waterside walkways.

St. Petersburg : The "Venice of the North" is one of the most beautiful cities of the world, and its aura of imperialism and graceful stillness engulfs its visitors. Initially founded by Peter the Great in 1703, it served primarily as a seaport on the Baltic. Its roads, facades and waterways convey a stoic energy derived from over 300 years of political, industrial and cultural birth and rebirth.

Tallinn : The capital of Estonia is a living museum that houses more complete remnants than most European cities. Winding cobblestone streets and storybook medieval houses accentuate its old town, while the vast, ungodly Lasnamäe apartment district captures the essence of the Soviet reign.

Kiel : Ahoy, Kiel! This Olympic city is a hub for international sailing events, including the renowned Kiel Week, held every June since 1882. Originally a Viking settlement, the city has caught up with the times, providing visitors with a plethora of dining, shopping and entertainment options. Meander through lush botanical gardens and marvel at the historic ships bobbing gently in the harbor.

Skagen : A large, busy harbor doesn't dampen the charm of Skagen's older neighborhoods, which offer distinctive yellow houses, great museums, ceramic and glass art galleries, and bike rental outlets. Harbourside restaurants serve fish fresh off the boats. If you're used to Caribbean beaches, this will take some getting used to, but we bet Skagen's craggy charms will win you over.
